antivirus problem

I have learned my lesson and want to install antivirus software. :oops: However: I purchased and downloaded Norton Antivirus over the internet. It simply won't install. It ran a virus checker first to determine if a virus would interfere with installation, but that came back clean. When I tried to install, the program went through a few windows, then just disappeared. I got a refund from those people and went and purchased the disc for McAfee virusscan. The same thing happened - the windows pop up quick, if I can click fast enough it will go to the next window, but they disappear very quickly. Weird part - I can download and install from microsoft website (got PowerToys) and I just installed QuickTax with no problems. Why won't antivirus install? How can I get the antivirus program installed?

Safe mode is a good idea to start with (press F8 before the Windows logo screen shows up, then pick "boot in safe mode" from the menu that shows up). After booting in Safe Mode, try your install. It sounds like there could something killing the install process, hopefully whatever it is doesn't run in safe mode, so the install can continue.
