antivirus problem

I have learned my lesson and want to install antivirus software. :oops:
However:
I purchased and downloaded Norton Antivirus over the internet. It simply won't install. It ran a virus checker first to determine if a virus would interfere with installation, but that came back clean. When I tried to install, the program went through a few windows, then just disappeared. I got a refund from those people and went and purchased the disc for McAfee virusscan. The same thing happened - the windows pop up quick, if I can click fast enough it will go to the next window, but they disappear very quickly. Weird part - I can download and install from microsoft website (got PowerToys) and I just installed QuickTax with no problems.

Why won't antivirus install? How can I get the antivirus program installed?
