We got to see a presentation at the NVidia booth by Gas Powered Games where they demoed an upcoming
expansion for Dungeon Siege II (I think it was Daniel and Marcy who ran it). I should prefix this with a disclaimer: I've never played Dungeon Siege I or II, so my opinion's not relative to the original. I'm just relating what I remember from the presentation. It started out looking promising. The detail in the artwork impressed me and there are updates to some other effects with more custom shaders for water and reflections. There are two new classes that allow cross-overs from existing classes. I think they were Stone Fist Warrior, who gets some nature magic along with warrior abilities, and a cross-over ranger/mage class. The ranger gets the usual ranger ablities and some "sacrificial magic"; that is the magic abilities allow the ranger to trade some health for a more effective spell. The new ranger also gets some cool-sounding spells whereby she marks selected enemies with a rune, then activates a spell on the marked enemies. The more enemies, the more powerful the spell.
I liked the sounds of it and the description was good. There was also a lot of description of new weaponery and combinations of items and skills that make each player's game very unique. The problem I had was that the game started to sound kind of formulaic. I mean, I can't complain too much because most adventure games seem to center around the whole power thing, with bigger and better swords and all the stats. Descriptions of the game sounded like they centered too much on this and not on level design or solving interesting problems or really doing anything new. If you're in to Dungeon Siege II already though and you've enjoyed the game, then I'm sure the expansion will be fun for you too. Besides the new classes there's a visual refresh for existing character classes. The artwork is very well done and should provide a little new look to things. The expansion picks up where the game leaves off and lets players continue from level 40. If you haven't finished Dungeon Siege or don't have a level 40 party (including people who've never played it before), there are several pre-made level 40 parties that you can use.
After the presentation was done, someone asked about an online component available with the expansion and a hint was given that there might be something forthcoming. Just a little carrot fo us today though, no details beyond that. Oh, and the expansion is slated for release in September of this year. See the
screenshots I took here and my other
E3 pictures here.
