After the Buying comes the ‘Getting’

After all that research I did, I finally bought the Compaq Presario R3000Z. Pretty exciting for me as I haven't had a new laptop notebook in ... six years? This one is pretty well-equipped, but I think I've been over enough specs to make even my eyes glaze over. I ordered it at Best Buy in the end and they talked me in to a $10 card that gives me back a couple bucks for every hundred that I spend. I think it ends up netting me $40 off (pay $10 for the card, get $50 back in gift cards). Of course the price of this will be eternal spam. So what else is new.

I planned to pick it up at lunch today (they said it would come in by the fourth), so I had the foresight to call Compaq before I went out. I hadn't heard from Best Buy but I thought it might be ready. Compaq told me that FedEx had dropped it and there was a signature. Great! I wasn't too excited before I heard that, but then I started thinking about what I can do on it this weekend. Of course you know where this is going. I went to Best Buy, hung around waiting for service for 15 minutes, then was told that FedEx hadn't been there today. Fine. I suppose I could have waited for them to call me. Whatever. The best part is that I get back to work after lunch and within an hour I have a voicemail from Best Buy saying that my computer has arrived :-/ .

Now I get to wait anxiously until I swing by there again on the way home. Or go and be told it was a false alarm ;-) .

Shweet! On the flip side, I had major problems with my Linux box last night...I booted things up and didn't find my /data partition, it had been unmounted. I re-mounted it but it failed to show up, so I thought I'd click "Restore partition table", that seemed to blow away all my mounted Unix partitions (in the graphical X utility I was using) and then it told me I had to reboot. I did that and now it fails to boot saying there is a disk error and that it needs to be repaired.

I may have lost my partition table and corrupted something major because now it won't boot at all into Linux. :( I'm going to try failsafe mode tonight and if that doesn't work, boot up via CD and if that doesn't work .... INSTALL THE DAMN THING OVER AGAIN!

Why can't things just work sometimes? I'm wondering if it's the age on the hard disks...

[...] I always thought fractals were a great source of eye candy. I’ve been meaning to write something that plots a fractal using SVG for some time now, but I actually got started from this old post on VML fractals. I rewrote the code at first to use SVG, then I started reworking and optimizing to get something that runs at least decently in Firefox. It wasn’t too hard to do, but I had a hard time getting the CPU usage down to something reasonable. With Internet Explorer and Adobe SVG Viewer 6, it ran very smoothly and there was no noticeable CPU usage increase. In Firefox 1.5, the CPU on my notebook was maxed out. With Opera 9 Beta on the same computer the CPU was maxed and the browser gets a little unresponsive. [...]
